Enhance your Essay-Writing Skills with our Online D3 Theory Exam Seminar
Join us for an exclusive seminar designed to elevate your essay-writing skills, specifically tailored for the D3 Theory exam. This paper has the lowest pass rate out of all Diploma exams, with only about a 55% pass rate. This seminar offers a unique opportunity to receive personalized feedback on your essay work.
Twelve (12) students (first come, first served) will be able to submit an approximately 800-word essay on a D3 question set by the instructor(deadline: September 3rd TUE, 23:59 JST). Each submitted essay will be reviewed by Alex Tsui DipWSET (Vintners’ Cup 2024) to highlight strengths and areas for improvement, with tailored advice on tackling D3 exam questions.
Then, on September 10th, the educator will hold a two-hour online session with a focus on essay-writing skills for the Diploma D3 Theory exam, drawing from the works that have been previously submitted. He will also explain expectations by examiners’ with the use of published Examiners’ Reports. The seminar is designed for non-native English speakers, or those with limited experience in academic-style essay writing.
This seminar will also be open to students who have not submitted an essay, to gain valuable insights for their study.

IMPORTANT:
① Enrolled students will receive the essay question around two weeks before the deadline. The deadline to submit the essays is September 3rd TUE, 2024 23:59. Detailed personalized feedback will be provided after the seminar around September 12th THU, 2024. Please note that late submissions are not guaranteed to receive proper feedback.
② To ensure unbiased feedback and to protect privacy, Caplan Wine Academy will submit the essays to the educator under pseudonyms. The name of the authors of each essay will not be revealed to the educator and it will not appear during the seminar.

How do Caplan online seminars work?
This online seminar will be held through「Zoom」by Zoom Video Communications. A URL link will be sent in advance, by clicking the URL the participants will be able to attend the seminar.
The seminar can be enjoyed by PC, Smartphone, Tablet as long as they are connected to the internet. For PC you can use the internet browser, but installing the dedicated Zoom software is recommended. For smartphones and tablet you will need the Zoom app. Please install it in advance.
The online seminar will also be recorded and the link to the video will be sent to all participants. You will be able to play it as many times as you want for 1 week.

Alex completed his WSET Diploma in Wines in 2023 with Distinction, and was awarded the Vintners' Cup as the top graduate of the cohort of 695. He was also awarded the Sandeman Port Prize for his performance in the Fortified Wines Unit (D5).
For the D3 Theory Exam, Alex achieved an overall Distinction grade (with 3 of the 5 essays at Distinction level). This is a feat only achieved by less than 0.4% of exam takers. English is Alex's second language but his familiarity with the British education system and academic-style writing contributed to his success.
Prior to completing the Diploma, he was an active member of the Oxford University Blind Tasting Society and represented the team in the annual Varsity Blind Tasting Match in 2020.
Alex is a native Hongkonger. He is currently a PhD researcher in Biochemistry with Oxford University, but based in Southern California. He holds a Master’s degree from ETH Zurich and a Bachelor’s degree from University College London. -
